A hardy cast-iron skillet even the worst cook will have some luck using. There’s nothing to get someone excited to experiment like a new toy!

cast iron skillet with salmon filets and asparagus in it

Amazon

This one is pre-seasoned and ready to use. Check out our explainer on how to take care of cast-iron skillets.

Promising review: “I love this skillet! I’ve used it on the stove: gas and electric (on glass tops do not drag this skillet on it, it will scratch the glass) as well as over fire outdoors. I’ve owned it for eight months now and it still looks as new as it did eight months ago. Make sure to research how to clean your cast iron cookware and always heat them up to evaporate any surface moisture after cleaning before oiling. I’ve made many different foods in this, Utica Greens, bacon, eggs, steak, pizza…etc. All have come out perfect. Be aware this skillet is huge so make sure you have room to store it and it is also heavy…About 12 pounds I think, so my wife does have trouble moving it, I also need 2 hands to carry the sucker especially when its loaded with food! I would say I would buy this again, but I see this skillet lasting for ever!” —Tinkerman

the screaming toy goat and a small pocket guide

amazon.com

Promising review: “I spend about 90% of my day silently screaming at the computer because, well, welcome to customer service. Since this little goat arrived, I no longer look like I am practicing for my appearance on Jerry Springer. I just push the little goat. He screams (but not in a disruptive way). I smile. I am no longer annoyed. I survived peak season because of this goat. I owe my sanity to you, screaming goat.” —Gab&Amanda

My Best Friend’s Exorcism, a funny (no, really) tome that is *so* ’80s and, yes, a pretty creepy read. If they’re into horror and comedy, this’ll be a hit.

the book cover

Amazon

I read this book this year — along with the author’s other books, HORRORSTOR that’d be great for IKEA heads, and The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires perfect for someone who likes spooky stuff, but not the demonic kind. The latter part describes my mom, who read the book upon my insistence after I finished it, and really liked it! I enjoyed *all* of Grady Hendrix’s book but loved this one exponentially more. I love scary stuff but thrive on comedy. Plus all those ’80s references made everything so much more fun. Also… just LOOK at that book cover.

Get it from Amazon for $12.99.

12.

Or Hood Feminism, an amazing read for anyone who’s trying to be an ally and has always identified as a feminist but is part of a group who already has a lot of privilege (like me, a white cis-woman).

the book cover

Amazon

This is something I also read this year. But as much as I enjoy ’80s horror tomes, this was much more impactful and will (hopefully) stick with me for the rest of my life. If your recipient has been sharing their anti-racist reads this year (whether they’ve actually been reading them or not, hopefully they have! Geez), this is one that can’t be missed. This covers how modern feminism often skips over the basic needs of people as an issue worth fighting for and the lack of someone’s basic needs being met impacts every other aspect of their life (think food insecurity and inaccessibility to safe neighborhoods). This collection of essays stings if you’re someone who, like me, hasn’t had to worry about if my basic needs are being met. But learning and growing in the hopes of helping others through your own actions *is* painful. I think this book is fantastic and if you think the recipient would also appreciate it, buy it for them and support this wonderful author, please!

Get it from Amazon for $15.69.

A Fire kids tablet for a grown-up approved way to keep your nephew occupied while the adults talk about important stuff…like all the new Star Wars shows. (Pssst, this has controls on it so the kids in your life can’t just download whatever to it.)

Promising review: “My 4-year-old daughter got this tablet as a Christmas gift. It’s been a hit. I now get quiet, stress-free rides in the car. On the weekends, I’ve even got her to play the tablet in the bed beside me for an hour or so while I sleep in. WIN! I love that I don’t have to worry about her downloading anything inappropriate, because she only has access to the approved kids’ curated entertainment. And it’s not just games, Amazon has books and shows on there too. The battery lasts all day, even on heavy driving/road trip days. Promising review: “I bought this as a birthday present for dad. He was super excited when he opened it, and got to work right away. The entire house now stinks of spicy, and a second recipe is already underway. My dad doesn’t care, but two of the pre-made sticker labels are for the sauce that can only be made once. I wish there were more, blank-er labels to write more info in. This kit is not all-inclusive, and you may have to buy more ingredients, but it is super fun and worth the buy.” —JR

Read why one BuzzFeeder loves it.

Promising review: “I love this machine. I got it as a Christmas gift to myself and it’s the best money I’ve ever spent. I’m on an elimination diet for my autoimmune disease. It means that I have to cook all my food myself. I CANNOT eat out. That is a huge amount of time and prep and work. This little machine is a lifesaver. There’s a bit of a learning curve figuring out how long things need to go, and how to adapt recipes from slow cookers and oven braising to work under pressure, but once you figure it out, it’s such a huge time saver. Plus it does so many different things. Such a time saver, and so delicious.” —CelesteEden
