In case you’ve missed all the buzz about it, Fate: The Winx Saga is the latest live-action adaptation from Netflix.

It’s inspired by a popular Italian-American kids’ cartoon called Winx Club, which was created by Iginio Straffi and was honestly one of my favourite shows growing up.

It had magic, friendship and these epic transformation scenes that were on par with Sailor Moon. Plus, although I didn’t realise this as a kid, Winx Club had such a great range of diverse characters — especially for a ’00s cartoon.

Although I’ve been hesitant to delve into the reboot because I was such a huge fan of the original (plus, there’s been a lot of talk about whitewashing in this new series), I decided to give it a go and watch the first episode.

Here are my thoughts!

Netflix

1. Tbh, I’m kind of nervous. Winx Club was my childhood and…I don’t have high expectations for this adaptation.

2. NO, BE POSITIVE! It’ll be different and that’s okay.

3. I’M DOING IT, I’M PRESSING PLAY.

4. The first line spoken in the very first episode of Fate: The Winx Saga is “Feckin’ sheep.” I’m howling, but also, that’s kind of iconic.

5. HE SAID IT AGAIN LMAO!

6. Oop, he just crossed some sort of barrier. Does he KNOW? Is he HUMAN? IS THIS ALFEA?

7. WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK??? WHY IS THERE A SHEEP CARCASS IN THE TREES??? WHY IS THIS SUDDENLY SPOOKY???

8. Oh, he’s dead. He’s really dead.

9. HELLO, IT’S BLOOM.

10. Once again, I am asking — is this a regular high school or Alfea?

11. There’s magic!!! We’re at Alfea, folks.

12. But…that totally removes the whole Bloom doesn’t know she’s a fairy subplot in the beginning? I feel like that was important.

13. There’s boys at Alfea!!!!!!!!!!! I repeat, there are B O Y S !

14. So, specialists study at Alfea instead of Red Fountain? I guess so.

15. Hellooooo cute blonde boy with the blue eyes. You must be Sky, Bloom’s future boyfriend.

16. The Otherworld? What on earth is THAT?

17. Okay, I need to stop comparing it to the cartoon. Bad Isha.

18. Riv..RIVEN? AND STELLA IS HERE TOO!!!!

19. You’re telling me that Stella and Bloom aren’t already friends because they defeat a troll together on Earth? Damn, that was a key scene.

20. IT’S FARAGONDA!!! MY BADASS HEADMISTRESS QUEEN. God, she was a great character.

21. Aisha is here already? Alright, another HUGE change from the original, but it makes sense that they would want to introduce the core characters quicker.

22. Wait, Aisha was definitely called Layla in the version of Winx Club I watched growing up.

23. Why would Bloom not tell her parents that she’s a fairy? Surely that would be the coolest thing ever.

24. Is Terra meant to be Flora? And if not, WHERE is my girl, Flora?

25. Oh…her cousin is Flora. But, that doesn’t tell me why Flora isn’t here.

26. OKAY, FAIRY WITH THE RED EYES WHO LOOKS INCREDIBLY DEMONIC. YOU NEED TO CHILL OUT.

27. I still can’t believe they decided to whitewash Musa. Like, I’m sure the actor playing her is great, but that was a missed opportunity for representation right there.

28. Oh yes, give me all the scenes with the specialists training.

29. Did…did Riven just call Bloom crazy? Yikes.

30. “She’s a ginge, they’re all nuts” — interesting choice from the writers here.

31. YEAH, YOU BEAT HIS ASS, SKY.

32. Okay, I do love how there’s female specialists and it’s not gender-specific anymore.

33. The Burned Ones? Could that be the witches of Cloud Tower?

34. Who is this teacher and why does he looked so familiar? I must Google him immediately.

35. OHHHH, it’s that dude who played Thomas Barrow in Downton Abbey, which no one will get because I’m old (well, I feel old because COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on my sense of time).

36. Um, what was the point of Musa and Aisha talking about how much they eat and their exercise routines in front of Terra, who clearly was uncomfortable? It felt very out of place.

37. Also, why is everyone being mean to Terra? She seems great and she’s giving out succulents to everyone. I would befriend her in an instant.

38. Wait, I just realised that the headmistress isn’t called Faragonda and that her name is Farah Dowling. Interesting, interesting.

39. Oh hey, Bloom’s eyes just changed colour too. I guess it’s a fairy thing when they’re feeling ~emotional~.

40. We’re 20 minutes in and I feel like nothing has really happened.

41. Does Brandon (Sky’s best friend and Stella’s boyfriend) just not exist in this version?

42. There are a lot of characters missing actually. I hope we see Tecna soon, she was my fave.

43. Are they trying to imply Bloom burnt down her house by accident?

44. Oh, they are.

45. Okay, Bloom and Aisha’s powers do look cool, I’ll give the show that.

46. Bloom’s mum really removed her door because she…slammed it? What in the name of toxic parenting? Could she not just yell at her like my parents do to me?

47. Well, now I get why Bloom didn’t tell her parents that she’s a fairy.

48. A fat joke aimed at Terra? Yeah, that didn’t need to happen.

49. At least it was shut down immediately, sigh.

50. WHAT IS THAT, IS THAT AN AN ALIEN? AN ALIEN IN A FAIRY WORLD???

51. Oh my god, why did I get so startled when it broke through the glass? Lmaooo, I need to calm down.

52. I tuned out for a second. How did Bloom get in these sewers? Wasn’t she visiting her parents?

53. FARAGONDA, no, uh, DOWLING, is here…I think?

54. Oh yeah, she fought off the alien thing. You go, imitation Faragonda.

55. The actor who plays Sky is very hot. I must make a mental note to look him up after this episode.

56. Oh…so we’re just going to change Musa from being the fairy of music to an empath? Hmph.

57. The Burned Ones can infect people? Oh boy.

58. Okay, so with the whole changeling deal, does that mean there’s a fairy family out there with a human baby since Bloom got switched to a human family?

59. My brain hurts thinking about that.

60. Ooh, I was wondering when we would find out Beatrix’s game.

61. Wait, that’s it? That episode felt looooooooong.

62. I guess Tecna and Flora will be introduced in later episodes…right?

63. Let me just quickly look up when, maybe I’ll skip ahead to those parts.

64. HELL NO, THEY DON’T MAKE AN APPEARANCE AT ALL?! YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME.

65. AND THE WITCHES AND CLOUD TOWER DON’T EXIST EITHER?!?!?!

66. I’m mad. Ooooh, I’m so mad.

67. I get that this series is intended to be different. But, they’ve really picked the parts they wanted and discarded the others that didn’t fit into this ~new~ version, huh?

68. I still don’t understand why Terra, a character that doesn’t even exist in the original, is here over Flora.

69. It’s like they just slapped the name “Winx” on this, but it’s such a drastic departure from the original that it doesn’t deserve that honour.

70. Am I overreacting? Maybe, but I think it’s because Winx Club was such a huge part of my childhood. Seeing parts of the original thrown out in favour of making this adaptation ~edgier~ is sad.

71. Like, Bloom doesn’t have to be this angsty teen? And Stella doesn’t need to be the mean and judgemental queen bee. That’s so cliché and I loved, loved, loved how those two immediately bonded in the original.

72. Granted, it’s the first episode and maybe it gets better. But, this is going in my “live-action adaptations that shouldn’t have happened” pile.

73. Alright, final thoughts: Fate: The Winx Saga is a fine show, but it’s a terrible adaptation of the original cartoon. If it didn’t have the name “Winx” in it, I would probably enjoy it a lot more.

74. And even though it’s probably not for me, or those who have a strong attachment to Winx Club, it’ll most likely attract a bunch of new fans, which is great.

75. Farewell, Fate: The Winx Saga. Maybe I’ll come back to you another time.

What are your thoughts on Fate: The Winx Saga?
