Welcome to yet another episode of “Things I Learned on TikTok.” Today we are talking about SOCKS.

IFC

This lesson is brought to us by Dr. Jessica Z. Andrade, who is currently in her third year as a pediatric resident medical doctor.

Dr. Jess recently went viral after posting this TikTok about the importance of wearing socks to bed:

In her video, which has over 2.6 million views, she explains, “Wearing socks makes your feet warm and this opens up the blood vessels that cool the body down. The body being cool tells the brain that it’s time for bed. So, actually, people that wear socks tend to fall asleep faster.”

IT MAKES SENSE, BUT I ALSO DID NOT KNOW THIS. DID YOU?!

To get more information, BuzzFeed spoke to Dr. Jess, who said that the information in her TikTok is backed in a 2007 study published in Physiology and Behavior. “Researchers noticed that changes in skin temperature, like cold feet, could interfere with falling and staying asleep. Results showed that, in adults, sleep-onset was accelerated by warm and neutral bed socks after lights-off — and this correlated to the increase in foot temperature. Meaning those who wore socks had a tendency to fall asleep faster,” she explained.

She went on to say that the reason why this happens is because dilation of the blood vessels in the skin — or increased blood flow to the skin — causes the body to regulate its temperature, which helps with the onset of sleep.

Dr. Jess suggested that if you don’t currently wear socks to bed, to try it and see if it helps you sleep! “In general, any type of comfortable socks can be tried, such as cotton or artificial fiber socks. It’s important to make sure they are not too tight to impair circulation. Wool socks are also an option!”

All that being said, we know there are plenty of people who already wear socks to bed but STILL struggle to sleep. “There are other potential reasons people may have trouble sleeping. First, it’s important to evaluate overall sleep hygiene. Sleep hygiene is a term used to describe the habits that help you have more restful sleep on a regular basis. Some of the basics of sleep hygiene include having a set bedtime and a bedtime routine. Other things include minimizing the use of electronics prior to bed and making sure the room is a comfortable temperature,” she said.

She added, “As always, consult your doctor if there are specific medical questions pertaining to your own individual health. This is intended to be general medical information and education and not intended to diagnose or treat any medical conditions.” Basically, consult your doctor if you need further help!

Anyway, that is the skinny on why you should wear socks to bed. BYE!
