Who is Fanny: Emily plays the heroine of the story, Fanny. She is an introverted young woman who, having been abandoned by her parents, is very close with her extended family, especially her cousin Linda and aunt Emily. The Pursuit Of Love is told through Fanny’s eyes, as she goes on a journey of finding her voice in 1940s England.

Where you know Emily from: She played Dierdre in Hail, Caesar!, Alice in Little Joe, and the title role in the 2017 film Daphne. Emily also appeared as The Widow in AMC series Into the Badlands.


Lily James as Linda Radlett

Who is Linda: Vivacious, imaginative, and romantic, Linda always follows her heart and her gut. She longs to break free of her strict upper-class family and find true happiness – and maybe love – among the denizens of high society London. But her impulsive nature often leads to her making pretty terrible decisions!

Where you know Lily from: Lily has appeared in several movies such as Cinderella, Baby Driver, Yesterday, and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. She’s also no stranger to period dramas, having starred in Downton Abbey, War & Peace, and Rebecca.


Dominic West as Uncle Matthew

Who is Matthew: Matthew is the domineering patriarch of the Radlett family, and Linda’s father. He is a country bumpkin at heart, and has very traditional views about a woman’s place in the home. Even though she is his favourite, he often finds himself at loggerheads with his daughter Linda.

Where you know Dominic from: Although he’s probably best known for playing Jimmy McNulty in The Wire, Dominic has also starred in numerous films including Pride, 300, Colette, and John Carter.


Dolly Wells as Aunt Sadie

Who is Sadie: Aunt Sadie is the affable yet ineffectual matriarch of the Radlett clan. Although she loves her family, she’s too inhibited by her aristocrat circumstances to ever say that out loud! As her aunt, Sadie sympathises with Fanny as she’s constantly being abandoned by her mother, who is known as “The Bolter”.

Where you know Dolly from: British comedy fans will recognise Dolly from her many appearances in shows like Campus, Some Girls, The IT Crowd, and The Mighty Boosh. She also recently starred in Can You Ever Forgive Me?, and put in an outstanding performance in the Dracula BBC miniseries as Sister Agatha Van Helsing/Dr Zoe Van Helsing.


Andrew Scott as Lord Merlin

Who is Merlin: Flamboyant and totally unabashed, Merlin is a bright young thing who lives near the Radlett family in the country. He loves art and culture, and is very free with his attitude towards love, life, and sex. Merlin becomes friendly with Fanny and especially Linda, who he takes under his wing.

Where you know Andrew from: Two words – sexy priest. Andrew has had roles in a ton of famous shows and movies, but he’s best known for his portrayal of The Priest in Fleabag and Jim Moriarty in Sherlock. You may also know him from Pride, 1917, Spectre, Black Mirror, and His Dark Materials.


Freddie Fox as Tony Kroesig

Who is Tony: Tony is a love interest for Linda. He can be cruel and pretentious, but Linda, desperate for love, is taken in by his good looks and charm.

Where you know Freddie from: Freddie starred in The Three Musketeers as King Louis and in The Riot Club as James Leighton-Masters. He also had a main role in the Channel 4 series Cucumber, the BBC series Parade’s End, and he played the title role in BBC serial The Mystery of Edwin Drood.


Annabel Mullion as Aunt Emily

Who is Emily: Emily is the sister of Sadie and Fanny’s mother. Compassionate and caring, she brought up Fanny in the absence of her parents. Now Fanny is older, Emily is busy in planning her own future.

Where you know Annabel from: Annabel has appeared in numerous TV shows such as Victoria, Doll and Em, Agatha Christie’s Poirot, and Law and Order UK. Her films include Mission: Impossible, Me Without You, Mother’s Milk, and A Christmas Carol.


John Heffernan as Davey Warbeck

Who is Davey: Davey is Emily’s husband and a distinguished writer and critic. Although he is kindhearted, Davey is often prone to unusual flights of fancy when it comes to his health and lifestyle. As a sort-of stepfather figure to Fanny, the pair are pretty close.

Where you know John from: As well as being an accomplished theatre actor like many others in the cast, John has appeared on screen in a plethora of TV shows including Luther, Dickensian, and The Crown. He is also known for his performance as Major Harold Webb in the movie Eye in the Sky.


Shazad Latif as Alfred Wincham

Who is Alfred: If he’s anything like his character in the source material – The Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford – Alfred is an Oxford man who becomes a suitor for Fanny.

Where you know Shazad from: Shazad is known for starring in the BBC TV series Spooks as Tariq Masood, in Toast of London as Clem Fandango, in My Mad Fat Diary as Dr. Nick Kassar, and in Penny Dreadful as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He’s also appeared in The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, The Man Who Knew Infinity, and The Commuter.


Assaad Bouab as Fabrice de Sauveterre

Who is Fabrice: Fabrice is a charismatic and wealthy French duke who Linda falls in love with. The pair meet in Paris when Linda is down her on luck.

Where you know Assaad from: Assaad stars as Hicham Janowski in French series Call My Agent! and as Qamar Maloof in Netflix’s Messiah. He has also appeared in Homeland, Days of Glory, and Peaky Blinders.


Emily Mortimer as Fanny’s mother, known as The Bolter

Who is The Bolter: Although she’s never identified by name, The Bolter’s reputation is known throughout her family and friends. She is a serial monogamist who flits from lover to lover, and only ever visits a fleeting interest upon her daughter, Fanny. She is the younger sister to Sadie and Emily.

Where you know Emily from: You’ll know Emily from her roles in movies such as Shutter Island, Mary Poppins Returns, Howl’s Moving Castle, Notting Hill, and Match Point. Her performance in Bright Young Things is a very similar vibe to The Pursuit Of Love, which Emily herself wrote and directed!
