There’s no doubt that you’ve watched — or at least heard — about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview with Oprah.

During the two-hour special, there were some shocking revelations that explored Harry and Meghan’s relationship with the royal family. But, the turning point, as described by the couple, was during their trip to Australia in 2018.

If you need a refresher, in October 2018, both Harry and Megan embarked on their first tour as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. This tour was a 14-day trip of the South Pacific, which included Australia. During this time, Meghan also announced that she was pregnant with Archie.

According to Harry, the success of the tour, with Meghan dazzling the public, meant that “the family got to see how incredible Meghan was at the job”.

But, at the same time, it “brought back memories” of his mother, Princess Diana, having a very similar experience nearly 40 years ago.

In 1983, Prince Charles and Diana visited Australia as part of their first official tour. As covered in Season 4 of The Crown, it cemented Diana’s endearing public presence, with her wowing crowds left, right and centre. But, the growing attention made their already turbulent marriage even more difficult.

In Diana: Her True Story, Andrew Morton wrote that: “The crowds complained when Prince Charles went over to their side of the street during a walkabout…In public, Charles accepted the revised status quo with good grace; in private, he blamed Diana.”

Diana herself shed light on this in a 1995 interview with the BBC, recalling that: “With the media attention came a lot of jealousy. A great deal of complicated situations arose because of that.”

In responding to Oprah’s question of whether there were hints of jealousy after Meghan’s success, Harry said: “I just wish that we would all just learn from the past.”
