A super handy apron that features built-in potholders, a conversion chart, three large pockets, and an adjustable neck strap. It’s basically the Cadillac of aprons, and with all the cooking they’ve been doing lately, they’ll certainly get great use out of it.

Food52

I own and love this apron. The canvas material is sturdy, but not uncomfortably thick, and the built-in pot holders are wildly useful when it comes to grabbing hot metal pot lids. I have a weirdly large amount of aprons, but this is the one I reach for when things are really splattering. And seeing as it’s my “the spaghetti sauce got too bubbly” apron, I’ve washed it in the washing machine and can report it has held up very well.

Promising review: “I have many aprons I don’t use. I had to try this one — it’s perfect! Love the features and the fit. The adjustable neck strap convinced me to order, as knots in most neck straps give me neck pain I can’t ignore. Love this apron!” —Blueberry

A pair of Glerups felted slippers to keep their tootsies nice and warm all day long. But since they’re made of breathable merino wool, they’re even great for the summer months if they just want something on their feet indoors. I can’t resist a good slipper and these are my fave.

Rachel Dunkel / Via BuzzFeed

Glerups rule! They’re nice and flexible because they’re felted, so it doesn’t feel too much like you’re wearing shoes inside — my feet still feel free! They come in leather- and rubber-soled versions and I opted for the leather. They still feel nice and sturdy and totally durable. I (accidentally) wear them outside all the time and they’ve held up very well! They’re definitely a splurge, but if we’re gonna be inside for the foreseeable future, I want my feet to be happy about it.

Get them from Backcountry for $71.21+ (available in sizes 36–47 and nine colors — these are listed in the “men’s” section, but check the size chart for US men’s and women’s size conversions).

A Porter Bowl so they can eat their work lunch, leftovers, or prepped meals out of a chic, functional vessel they’ll want to show off.

pink porter bowl full of a beet and grain salad

Amazon

I use my Porter Bowl basically every time I bring my lunch to work, and now that I’m working from home, I use it all the time to store leftovers so they’re already portioned out. The lid vacuum seals tightly, and I’ve never had a problem with leaks. It’s both microwavable and dishwasher-safe which is obviously a huge win in my book. And it just feels nice to eat lunch out of a real piece of dishware, rather than flimsy plastic. I have the ceramic version and haven’t had any problems with scratching. It’s rubber-coated, so it’s easy to travel with and doesn’t slide around. Last year I gave one to everyone in my family as what I called an ‘Oprah Gift’ — you get a Porter Bowl! You get a Porter Bowl! Everyone gets a Porter Bowl!

Get it from Amazon for $25+ (available in 10 colors in plastic and ceramic versions).

A cold brew maker to save them big bucks on bean juice in the new year — all those early morning coffee runs are starting to add up! And having their favorite bevy in the comfort of their home? Heaven.

Promising review: “This is amazing! I bought this for a gift for my husband who drinks iced coffee all year long. He says it makes such a smooth-tasting and strong iced coffee. He gets two drinks out of each batch that he makes. It’s easy to clean and can go in the dishwasher. It’s durable — I know as I’m clumsy and have dropped it several times without an issue. A foldable desk from Wayfair so they can finally have a designated space for working from home instead of sitting hunched over everywhere from the couch to the bed and back to the couch again.

buzzfeeder's desk with a spread of colorful accessories and a laptop

Sam Tomaszewski / BuzzFeed

My colleague Samantha Tomaszewski has this desk and loves it! In her words: “This folding desk was a WFH lifesaver. When I first bought it, I was still living with roommates and I was able to fit it into my bedroom alongside my bed with room to spare. It’s small enough to not take over a full room, but still fits everything I needed on it. Plus, it folds up for easy setup and storage if you need to put it away at the end of your work day. With the addition of some super cute marble contact paper, I’m actually excited to sit down and get some work done (even though I do still miss working in an office).”

A Hydroflask travel coffee mug, because their pickiness about beverage temperature is one of the things you love most about them.

Amazon

I have this mug and it fully rocks. Just like the reliable Hydroflask water bottles keep things cold for what feels like eternity, likewise this keeps liquid nice and hot for hours. The strap on the lid is shockingly handy. It’s perfect for walking to the car or subway — no more squishing a mug in your elbow crease while you struggle with your keys hoping you don’t drop either! The lid is sturdy and fairly leakproof, but even so I wouldn’t throw it into a bag to just let it jumble around. BUT I feel like that about 99% of travel mugs. I have too many travel mugs and this is one of my very favorites — worth the extra $$, especially as a gift. It’s BPA-free and dishwasher-safe.

Promising review: “This is my best coffee friend. I had no idea how lacking I was until I purchased it. I can get busy and forget I have coffee (I know, blasphemy!) but this thing keeps it warm FOR HOURS! No joke, HOURS! I will buy another one for the person I love in this world, because they deserve this type of coffee happiness! And so do you! Buy it — you are welcome.” —Ari Walker

model sitting on a toilet with their feet elevated on the squatty potty

Amazon

Promising review: “I bought this about a month ago for my wife and I and really wanted to get some good time in with it before I wrote this review. We are pretty healthy people, work out when possible, and have no problems when it comes to #2. That said, this is by far the best bathroom accessory you can buy. I like to poop. It’s literally the first thing I do in the morning. This will make it that more enjoyable. Sit down, pull it out from the toilet, put your feet up, and bombs away! It feels like a straight pipe coming from your colon. Remember those difficult to push out BMs? No more! With just a slight push, you are done. Gravity takes over, and out she comes. This is how the human body was designed to poop. We literally pooped like this for thousands of years! I recommend this to all my friends, who laugh at me till they try it. Stop making it hard on yourself when you poop. Buy a Squatty Potty!” —jjl1911

Nisolo Classic Chelsea Boots for stomping, kicking, moonwalking, and whatever else their feet do with the utmost sense of style.

Rachel Dunkel / BuzzFeed

I love these boots and think they’d make a remarkable gift — a splurge, but they’re so high-quality it’s well worth it. These are great everyday boots that look amazing with basically everything and really ~elevate~ whatever you pair them with. They took a little time to break in around the toe box for me, but it really paid off, as they now fit like a glove…or…like a shoe that just fits really well, I guess. I’ve had these for probably close to two years, have walked in them *so* much, and they’re still in incredible shape. I anticipate getting at least two more years out of them as-is — they don’t even seem close to needing to be resoled yet, but I definitely will do so when the time comes. Again, they are definitely an investment, but considering I used to pay about half as much for boots that would poop out after one year, I consider them well worth it. I recommend going up a half size for the perfect fit.

Get them from Nisolo for $200 (available in women’s sizes 5–11 and four colors).

A Simple Elephant planner to help make life a little more manageable for the partner with things to do and goals to achieve.

BuzzFeed, Amazon

This is one of our BuzzFeed Reviews picks for best productivity planner!

Promising review: “This freaking planner… it’s EVERYTHING I needed. I’ll let you guys in on how I organized mine. Color coded all five goals at the beginning, and then when I was doing something daily, weekly, monthly that served those goals, I wrote that in the corresponding color. So you can glance at a week and say, ‘Yes, I’m hitting Goals 1, 2, and 3 but not 4 and 5’ or whatever, but that system helps me feel tethered in my daily activities to my bigger goals. I also love the vision board and space for mind mapping. I have severe adult ADHD and am a trauma victim, so I need therapeutic tools (plus meds) to help organize my thoughts, and this planner has thought of everything. Space for journaling at the back — like 60 pages. On each weekly page spread, there’s a place for weekly goals (again color-coded to yearly goals), successes, and what I can work on. This is the planner!!” —Kelly Wolfe

A Nintendo Switch Lite so they can game on the go. They still talk about their Gameboy from 1999 with such fondness…I think it’s time to bring the magic back.

Promising review: “This feels sooo much better in the hands than the bulkier original Switch, that I can’t go back. Even though it’s lighter, it feels more solid as the Joy Cons do not come off, and it doesn’t bend like the old one did. My arms don’t get tired at all holding this. AND it had an actual D-pad! I also do not notice the smaller screen when playing, at all. It’s just a much more pleasant handheld experience, which is exactly why I go it.” —J. fox

Get it from Amazon for $199 (available in four colors).

A simple yet stylish gold chain necklace to effortlessly add a touch of casual glam to their everyday look.

Kayla Boyd / BuzzFeed

My colleague Kayla Boyd has this necklace and loves it! In her words: “Chunky gold chain necklaces have really been on trend this summer. I love them because they’re kind of simple, but still have a pretty bold style impact. I bought this one because BaubleBar is one of my go-to accessory shops and they had a lot of great options. I like this one because it’s so easy to add to a simple T-shirt or sweatshirt and make it look instantly more elevated.

Promising review: “I bought the pizza sock box for my girlfriend’s birthday. And she loves them so much that she won’t even wear them because of how awesome the packaging is. So know I’ll be purchasing a second box of them just so she can wear one and collect the other.” —Amazon Customer

Promising review: “Speaking as a hirsute gentleman, the Luxe Bidet Neo 120 has soured me on pooping in bidet-less toilets forever. It’s shown me the difference between rubbing peanut butter out of shag carpeting with a paper towel, and that sparkling clean feeling you get right when you step out of the shower.” —Mercury

A large leather Madewell transport tote that’s come to be one of the brand’s signature items and is sure to become one of your beloved’s most-used bags. I got this as a gift six years ago and have cherished it since that day!

Rachel Dunkel / BuzzFeed

Random canvas totes may come and go, but nothing beats having a permanent, go-to bag. I’ve had this since college when I used it to carry my heavy load of books, my laptop, and other English major paraphernalia, but it’s transitioned flawlessly into my adult life where — OK — I still use it to carry books and my computer. The leather is getting a lovely patina and the structure of the bag is as strong as the day I got it. It has one zippered interior pocket which is perfect for keys, cards, or any other tiny necessities. I received this as a gift, so I can confirm that it makes a good one! My bag is even monogrammed, which made the gift all the more special. (You can add monogramming to almost any Madewell leather or denim item for $10 or for free if you’re a Madewell Insider!)

Get it from Madewell for $168 (available in four colors)

Porter Seal-Tight Glass Containers, because practical gifts are underrated. These are one of the best *and* cutest food storage products around. Their screw-top lid ensures no leakage, making them perfect for throwing snacks or a bowl lunch into their bag.

The jars are BPA-free, as well as microwave- and dishwasher-safe.

Before working from home became the norm, I would use these handy jars to bring my lunch almost every day. They’re perfect for things like fruit, salad, or something saucy — stuff you really don’t want to get squished *and* want to ensure doesn’t leak into your bag. *But* I have found that I use them just as much at home full-time! They are of course great for leftovers, but also for prepped ingredients for the week. Shedded cheese, prepped chicken, and chopped veggies usually live in these, ready to be utilized for a quick lunch or snack. They clean *super* well — I even have the cream color and it recovered from storing beets! 10/10 from me.

Get them from Amazon for $24.40+ (available in two sizes and five colors).

Some loose leaf tea from Brooklyn Tea that’ll make their nights spent at home feel a little cozier. I particularly recommend their Vanilla Rooibos and Darjeeling teas. If my partner is out there reading this, yes, I would like you to repurchase these as a gift, please!

Brooklyn Tea is Black-owned and based in — you guessed it! — Brooklyn, New York. I love their tea because it’s very high quality *and* they give you super precise brewing instructions on the back of the packaging. So helpful! Due to high demand, orders will take three to four weeks, but it’s worth it! And hey, it’s something to look forward to.

Get them from Brooklyn Tea: the Vanilla Rooibos for $5.99+ (available in six sizes) and the Darjeeling for $6.99+ (available in six sizes).

A cozy Chappy Wrap blanket made of a cotton blend that’s nice and warm but also super breathable. If your boo needs to be under a blanket at basically all times like me, they’ll dig this, also like me. In fact, I’m under my Chappy Wrap blanket writing this right now!

Allbirds Wool Runners that are supportive, great for warm or cold weather, and are one of my personal favorite shoes. After two years of lovin’ they’re barely showing signs of wear. I got them as a gift myself and have worn them everywhere since — the photo below is me wearing them to literally go skydiving!

Rachel Dunkel / BuzzFeed

I really wondered if these would live up to the hype, but the answer is a resounding “yes.” I’ve had them going on three years, have put a TON of miles on them, and they’re somehow showing no signs of aging. They stay shockingly clean, are super light, and are of course mega comfortable, which is what skyrocketed them to fame in the first place. They’re even machine washable, a quality I thought was going to have to use all the time because of their wool exterior, but they’ve never seemed dirty enough to warrant a wash! I used to love them especially for days when I was traveling, but I also love them for bopping around the neighborhood and even wearing around the house when my feet want some support. When I got them I thought they’d be a little niche, but I throw them on for more occasions than I would have ever imagined, from grocery runs to grand adventures. I got a whole size up from what I normally wear and they fit perfectly.

Get them from Allbirds for $95 for women’s sizes (available in sizes 5–11 and 12 colors) and $95 for men’s sizes (available in sizes 8–14 and nine colors).
